Paddy Shevlin
What can we say about the 'ole boy? Charming, debonaire, dashing obviously, but he'd be too modest to agree.
Bit obsessive though when it comes to the things that make him tick. His passion for 'The Poppies' (Kettering Town FC) has led to many seriously questioning his sanity over the years, he claims it is just unconditional love. Then there are the things that really turn the women on; like this is the guy who takes two papers every day and three broadsheets on a Sunday. Loves doing Open University degrees, engaging in political debate, working out his each way trebles - and ironing!!
Soul Survivors though is the outlet for the other overwhelming passion in his life and it's existence and his association with the other three 'Soul nuts' is as good as it gets for him.
When you see his daughters Emma, Niamh and Orla - it's hard to figure out how he had any part in their creation. They're great looking and sensible!!
Paddy, born of pedigree Mayo stock, was brought up on the mean streets of Kettering where everyone is known as 'me duck' or 'air ole gel or boy'. He went to the local Grammar School, just downwind from the Weetabix factory, where he was in the same class as Sir Horace Gentleman of The Specials and Phil West who once sat on the committee of The Ise Community Centre! He couldn't escape 'the soul' growing up in a town where there was at least one soul event every night of the week. The Tin Hat and North Park were two of the most prominent venues and attracted fans from all over the Midlands to see awesome acts like Jimmy Ruffin, Ben E King, Garnet Mimms, Showstoppers, Shirelles, Flirtations etc. Indeed Clive's ole boy, Noel, brought many of them to the town.
His education in that field escalated when he went off to college and became a regular at The Torch all nighters, Blackpool Mecca and all the major venues that came to the fore as 'Northern Soul' was taking off. Acts like Major Lance, Otis Leavill, Sam and Dave etc came into his radar as well as the entire Motown and Philly stables. Missing Jackie Wilson and Wilson Pickett remain his two biggest regrets.
Now we've just got to find him a Guardian reading woman who likes listening to Darrell Banks and getting her ironing done. If you've got a nomination, you'll get a free case of Tunnock's Caramel Wafers - yes, he likes them as well!
